Successes!
Chris McGill, one of our students from Maybole, was awarded £100 at a ceremony at Ayr Town Hall as a volunteer with the Princes Trust.
Bozena and Joanna - two of our ESOL students - have found employment as a result of learning to speak English. Congratulations!
Isabelle, one of our student successes, has just bought ‘The Children's Writers and Artists Yearbook’ to begin her search for a publisher for her children’s stories. ‘You will definitely get a signed copy IF I do manage to land one in print...’ she says!
Congratulations too to Ann Gentilomo, one of our volunteer tutors, who receives her Honours Degree from Caledonian University this summer.
Jack Walsh
It is with much sadness that we have to report Jack’s death. Jack had been with us as a tutor since 10th January 2005 when he came to live in Maybole after spending many years in Zimbabwe as a police officer. He had a great rapport with his students and his sense of humour and relaxed approach brought the best out of them.
One example, which he was particularly proud of, was helping a young man move from farming free range chickens to joining the police force. This had been a lifetime ambition for the student and he accredited Jack with his success, asking him to his passing out parade.
As well as continuing to tutor students in Maybole, Jack was also a key player in The Strathclyde Police Entry Test Project. He tutored 12 students throughout an intensive course and had a 100% pass rate!
He also tutored in The Learning Shop. At his funeral, four of his students were there, which says it all. He will be sadly missed by all of us.

Goodbye from Maggie
Well not quite! Since September 2006 I have held 2 part time Literacy Development Worker posts which made me full time. Now I’ve decided to give up one of the posts so I’ll have more time with my family, as they say.
From the end of June I will be the LDW for North Ayr with responsibility for ESOL. I will be based at the John Pollock Centre. A new LDW will be appointed for South Ayr and he or she will be based in the Learning Shop.
I want to say to all the tutors I have worked with a very big thank you for all your hard work and commitment and the progress you have made with your students. It has been a great pleasure working with you. I will be in the Learning Shop now and then so hope to bump into you then.

Good Luck to Gail
Gail Douglas will also be leaving us for a while, but not forever! Gail is having her first baby in September, so her IT classes and special groups will have to survive without her for a year … however, we hope to have a replacement Community Learning Assistant to fill the gap … watch this space!
