All Aboard The Literacies Express!!!

The Learning Shop Newsletter We’re planning out how to deliver literacies in South Ayrshire over the next two years, and we needed to know what everyone thought. Everyone? Well, lots of people! We contacted all our learning partners in South Ayrshire, some tutors, and people we’ve worked with who’ve run literacy projects over the last three years or so. We got a great response with some really imaginative ideas, and that’s why we arranged a Literacies Forum in the County Hall in Ayr on Wednesday 24 August. It was an opportunity to feed back our findings to everyone who responded to our questionnaire, and to pick their brains a little more!

All Aboard The Literacies Express’ we called it. That's not as daft as it sounds. You see, we like to think that the Scottish Executive ‘drives’ the train with funding. We’ve got an ‘engine’ that supports all our activities (that’s The Learning Shop staff and the Literacy Development Workers) and a whole string of ‘wagons’ or ‘carriages’ which are the individual projects running in South Ayrshire. The whole idea is that if we work together the train will move easily on the tracks, and our students’ journey into literacies will be a happy and exciting experience. How about that!

Sixty people were welcomed by Councillor Murray,Convenor of Lifelong Learning, and the day was introduced by David Kiltie, Chairman of the Action Plan Management Group. As Literacies Manager, I shared the results of our research with the audience and then everyone got involved in planning out potential literacies projects with partners.Small group tuition, on-the-spot help and one-to-one tutoring were all popular options. The majority of respondents felt that small projects tailored to the needs of their clients were the best way forward, especially if they were supported by central staff. Now we’re asking students what they think. So if you’re a tutor and you haven’t asked your student to fill in one of our questionnaires (or just tell you their answers) please get a form from The Learning Shop and help our consultation with learners to be a really good one.
