Tutor of the Season!
Allan Gow is a retired history teacher who was missing contact with students. He didn’t want to do supply teaching, but still wanted to be involved with helping people to learn. One day he was passing The Learning Shop and paused to read the placards in the window. He decided to offer his help. A few days later, he visited The Learning Shop and was hooked!
We asked Allan why he likes working as a volunteer tutor for Adult Learning.
“I know from personal experience what it feels like to be a failure in education terms,” he said. “I had a brilliant career in primary school and won a Dux medal. But secondary school was a disaster for me. Then I got a dead end job in the Civil Service. My self esteem was low and I was miserable. Adult learning gave me a second chance. I finally got an Open University degree and got a job that I loved in teaching.”
“I want to help others to get that second chance.”
