Adult Learning

Information for community groups and organisations, employers, referrers and spotters and other interested groups and individuals.

Adult Learning is the new name for Adult literacy in South Ayrshire. Adult Learning is offered by South Ayrshire Council’s Department of Education, Culture and Lifelong Learning and is part of the Community Education Service.

Adult Learning offers free support to anyone over eighteen, living in South Ayrshire, who wishes to improve their reading, writing, spelling or calculation. Support is provided through:

  • One-to-one tuition
  • Small group tuition
  • Local drop-in facilities

In addition, Adult Learning may request appropriate specialist help where an individual has specific educational needs beyond our professional capacity.

The service is run by trained, professional staff and supported by trained sessional staff and volunteer tutors.

Each new person who requests literacy support will receive an informal interview with a local literacy development worker who will assess the learner’s needs.

An Individual Learning Plan will be negotiated with each person based on the subjects, tasks and material agreed with the literacy development worker.

Adult Learners choose where and how they want to work. They meet their individual tutor in local accommodation convenient to themselves; or perhaps agree to work in a local group; or learn at a local drop-in facility. They work towards their own personal targets, using learning materials specially selected for them. Progress is reviewed continuously, and they receive regular guidance as to their next steps.

At present, much of Adult Learning is not accredited. However, the skills achieved may lead to accreditation as the learner moves towards more formal education and training (if that is their choice). Some Adult Learners make use of our service simply to improve their confidence and self worth, and to cope more effectively with everyday life. Some Adult Learners have poor literacy skills, others may be looking to prepare for entry to a college course, or just to improve a basic skill such as handwriting, calculating percentages, spelling or sending an email.

If you would like a stock of referral sheets, or just some further information about Adult Learning, please phone Linda Muir, Literacies Manager, FREE on 0800 389 8320.
