Significant Activity Projects
Adult Learning

Since 2001, Adult Learning has been involved in literacies projects across South Ayrshire. We work with over 30 partners and providers supported by the South Ayrshire Community Learning Partnership. This is part of the Scottish Executive’s wider Adult Literacies Action Plan and will continue until at least March 2006. The projects have helped adults from all sorts of different backgrounds and interests to improve their reading, writing and counting. These are just some of the comments our clients have made:

  • I have more confidence in myself and will help my daughter with her homework whereas before I would not even look at it…
  • I now have a part-time job in a charity shop as a volunteer…
  • My confidence has grown and I feel better about going to my school and speaking to teachers…
  • This month has been full of positive surprises, especially my visit to Ayr College. The visit has shown me that I have the ability to take my studying to the next level…
  • I feel as if I am gaining more confidence in reading…

Our projects come in all shapes and sizes. South Ayrshire Community Learning Partnership has funded the Dyslexia Centre at Ayr College, where members of the public who feel they may have dyslexia can make an appointment for advice and a general assessment. They have supported Headway Ayrshire’s Computer Club and provided a tutor to work with members of the Ayr Stroke Club, Clients of SCOOP in Girvan and Signposts in Maybole have received support to help them prepare to find new work

In 2004, The Jolly Dollies Drama Group from Lochside, worked with Brassneck Productions and a literacy worker to write, produce and perform ‘The Deepest Shelter in Town’ at Ayr Gaiety Theatre in March. It was a huge success and has been used as an example of effective practice by Learning Connections.
